Online learning platforms are marketplaces where teachers can post their courses and students/users can pay for them directly. With an increasing shift from traditional courses to online ones, the e-learning industry is projected to grow from $107 billion in 2015 to $403 billion by 2025.
This represents an opportunity for content creators to increase their earning and for learners to broaden their horizons. With that being said, here are 6 of some of the best e-learning platforms. Some of these platforms can help you in a way to bring onboarding process more closer to your new employees.
With over 24 million students, 35,000 instructors and 100,000 course, Udemy is one of the best and largest marketplace for online courses. If you are a content creator you will have to sign up as a premium instructor, and upon approval, you can start creating courses.
Udemy’s marketing features such as: placement in their marketing email, the affiliate program and inclusion in discount deals are at your disposal to use as a means to promote your course.
The price user will pay depends from course to course, but you will usually find discounts for a lot of them.
Price setting freedom and good revenue share. With Udemy you have the possibility of setting your own price with 100% of the revenue going to the in-structure if new users join and 50% if existing users join.
Marketing Promotions. Once in a while, you will be able to opt-in for promotions run by Udemy that can help you reach larger audiences on their platform. Keep in mind that this is optional.
24/7 support. 24/7 support is offered by Udemy, plus a large number of helpful articles on their website.
Intense competition within and outside the platform. Unfortunately you cannot choose your placement on the website, and with fierce competition, the number of reviews and the rating of the course combined with Udemy’s algorithms the placement of your course on the webpage is uncertain.
With that aside, Udemy has strong competitors in the market as well, such as: Skillshare, Linkedin Learning, Coursera that can appear on the same Google page, and thus divert potential users to other platforms.
Refund within 30 days. While this may sound excellent for users, it is certainly a disadvantage for instructors. This is due to the fact that, as a student you can complete the course in less than 30 days and then ask for a refund.
Also be careful that you can only request a refund on Udemy’s website or on the Android app.
Skillshare has over 29,000 classes and 4+ million students with a focus on creative type of lessons. You will find courses from cooking to photography and from music production to entrepreneurship. A class usually lasts between 20 to 90 minutes split into short lessons.
Skillshare will cost you $99 per year as a student (user) and if you are a course creator it is free.

Community discussions forum. This allows students and professionals to connect with one another while sharing ideas, feedback and progress.
Reliable classes taught by a large base of creators and entrepreneurs. Skillshare prides itself on professional and high-quality classes and if you have the same standards and can offer creative content then this is the right place for you.
Skillshare help. The company can help you (premium member) with production, course planning and online course creation. They can also help outline your course based on the needs of their audience.
Royalty system. Skillshares’s revenue from subscriptions is split between the teachers and the company itself. 30 to 50% goes to teachers and the rest to different operations of the organization.
Instructors who have just recently started will struggle compared to well established ones as the revenue received is based on the minutes watched by students. Moreover, if someone watches the video at two times the speed then they will receive only half the compensation of the video watched at normal speed.
Email support. There is no calling option on the website so the only help you will get will be via email.
With courses from some of the world’s largest and best companies and universities, Coursera is the ideal place to search for professional online courses taught by instructors from some of the world’s renowned universities.
The lectures can be completed in 4-6 week (some even less if you have the time), and include video lectures, peer-reviewed assignments and community discussion forums.
Variety of offerings.You can join Coursera for free, and there are three types of offerings:
- Courses that cost between $29-99/month, take 4-6 weeks to finish, and at the end you will receive an electronic course certification
- Specializations are courses to master a specific career skills by completing a series of rigorous courses, tackle real business challenges at a price of $39-79/month. The course takes 4-6 months to complete, earning at the end a Specialization Certificate.
- Online Degrees are university-recognized degrees that can take between 1-3 years to complete. Coursera worked with university partners to make flexible and affordable online degree programs. The current prices are from $15-$25000 and upon completion you will receive an accredited master’s degree.
Community. Coursera has 7000 members in its community where you can ask and help other users, discuss the subject you are studying and meet learners around the world.

Formerly known as Lynda.com, LinkedIn Learning is an online course marketplace with over 13.000 courses made specifically for business professionals. The courses are divided into three categories: Business, Creative, Technology with a multitude of subjects to choose from.
If you are a working professional and want to keep up with the times and keep your skills up-to-date then this is a good platform to do so.
Accessibility (Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android). Your courses can be accessed on any device you have. As a bonus, you can download your courses to finish them offline if wish to do so.
Lessons from experts. LinkedIn made sure that the courses it features are created by qualified and skilled professionals.
No Degrees or Certifications. The platform is not designed to provide you with a degree or certification but to provide you with courses that can teach you in order to take the certification separately. The website has a dedicated page with the certifications you can take and the lesson you can follow in order to pass them.
Price. There are only two price options which are: monthly and annual. The downside is that the price is higher than other competitors.
Edx is an online learning platform created by a few scientists from Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The website contains professional/university-level online courses that can be joined for free, but require payment in order to receive a certificate.
University-level courses. As it was established by academics, Edx tries to keep the same level of quality throughout the courses it has.
Different types of programs and courses. As a student you can choose between five options that are tailored to the different needs users might have.
Hefty price tag: Pricing depends on the two types of courses: verified and unverified. Unverified one are free and the price or the verified lesson can range from $50-$500+ or even more depending who created the course.
(Some) poorly made courses: Users have complained that some courses are poorly made with grammar and spelling mistakes, and feedback that can be difficult to receive.
